Lesson 2

Basic

1 'do' é usado em frases negativas para colocar o verbo principal no presente:

I don't want this                      - Não quero isto.
I don't think it is important       - Não acho que é importante.
I don't go out on Mondays       - Não saio nas segundas.
I don't take sugar in my coffee - Não uso açúcar no café.
I don't smoke or drink              - Não fumo nem bebo.

Obs.: usamos '
do' porque não podemos dizer 'I want not, I think not etc', pois só podemos colocar a partícula 'not' depois de verbos auxiliares.

2 'do' é usado também em frases interrogativas:

Do you smoke? - Você fuma?

Do you want this?
Do you think it is important?
Do you go out on Mondays?
Do you take sugar in your coffee?
Do you smoke or drink?

3 com 'he', 'she' e 'it' acrescentamos 'es' ao 'do':

She do
esn't want this.

Do
es he think it is important?

4 'Do' não aparece em frases afirmativas, mas note o que acontece quando usamos 'he', 'she' e 'it':

- Adicionamos 's' à maioria dos verbos:

He
likeS meat
She
likeS meat
It
likeS meat

wear    wear
s
speak  speak
s
live       live
s

- Mas 'go' e 'do' são diferentes:

go        go
es
do        do

play      play
s

- 'have' é irregular:

have      has
